We Love

“We love, because He first loved us” (John 4:19).  This verse is primarily aimed at our brothers and sisters in Christ as seen in the next two verses.

The earliest manuscripts omit “Him” as in “We love Him” – God, but the exclusion does no violence to the New Testament message.

We love our brother because we received love from God first.  God is love (1 John 4:7-8).  We also love our neighbor and sinners who need Christ’s redeeming blood.  Those outside the church must experience the love of God through us.

We love, because He first loved us.  This verse is not an exhortation such as “Let us love.”  It is a statement of fact; “We love.”  It is assumed that we love because of whom we are, God’s children.
