In the mid-1940s, the leadership of the University Avenue Church of Christ determined that a new congregation was needed to serve the city's west side. They established the West Austin Church of Christ, which is today Highland Village Church of Christ. The church was originally located on 35th Street and eventually adopted the neighborhood's name of Brykerwood. By the late 1950s, a growing congregation and limited space forced the church to move a couple of miles north to its present location on 4716 Bull Creek Road. The main building was completed in 1960 and the classroom wing in 1964. Three years later, the church purchased an adjacent house that now serves as an annex. Thanks to Austin's dramatic growth, Highland Village is no longer considered a "west side" church. The location is now considered to be north central Austin - nestled between two highly esteemed neighborhoods, Tarrytown and Hyde Park, and close to downtown, the University of Texas, and other major centers. With a congregation of about 100, Highland Village's membership ranges from retirees who have belonged for 30 years or more, to professionals and young families. Many of the folks who have placed membership at Highland Village were influenced by the friendliness of church members that sometimes is missing in larger churches. Through the years, the congregation has helped establish other congregations in the Austin area and supports missionary and benevolence programs around the world.
